Vaccination to resume early August as Uganda receives 586,080 Covid-19 vaccine doses.
Uganda is set to receive 586,080 Covid-19 vaccine doses at the end of July. These include 286,080 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine which will arrive in the country on 30 July 2021 and 300,000 doses of Sinovac vaccine which will arrive on 31 July 2021.
Following the arrival of the vaccines, the Ministry of Health will resume the countrywide vaccination exercise, prioritizing those who received the first jab and other high risk categories.
Over 1.1 million Ugandans have so far received their first jab of AstraZeneca vaccine while just over 200,000 have been fully immunized.
The Ministry of health advises Ugandans to continue observing the preventive measures until the country vaccinates a target population of 22 million people.
Uganda is currently battling the second wave of Covid-19 which has claimed the lives of more than 2,500 people.
The Minister of Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng recently revealed that the legal requirements through which Uganda will be able to access 11 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been concluded.
“The legal requirements between Uganda, the COVAX facility and the African Union have been concluded,” Aceng said on Tuesday in her address to the nation.
She said an order of 9 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine was placed with the COVAX facility, and that the country is awaiting feedback on availability.
In addition, Aceng said an order of 2 million doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccines has been signed up with the African Union and a down payment of $3m (sh10.6b) has been affected.
