Renowned national political players have been spotted in Kasese district canvassing votes for their various party candidates ahead of the Busongora County South by-election.
According to the Electoral Commission Roadmap that was released on July 01, 2022 by Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, the polling day is slated for Thursday August 18, 2022.
The seat fell vacant after the Court of Appeal nullified the election of Gideon Thembo Mujungu on grounds that the January 14 Parliamentary election was marred by irregularities.
Ever since the campaigns began, a section of political leaders at the national level have been thronging Kasese district to convince the electorate about the need for them their candidates to be voted into parliament.
Among the spotted national politicians is Hon. Norbert Mao, the Democratic Party President who also doubles as the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs who was in the district to canvas votes for Bernadette Businge, the DP’s candidate in the race.
Jackson Mbaju Kathika of the National Unity Platform –NUP has also been able to attract, Rt. Hon. Levis Lubongoya, the NUP Secretary General, Joel Ssenyonyi, the NUP Spokesperson and MP for Nakawa West, Hillary Kiyaga commonly known as Dr. Hilda Man, the MP for Mawokota North and Bukeni Ali alias Nubian Li among others.
The NUPs team has also been backed by a delegation from the Alliance for National Transformation- ANT including Hon. Yokasi Bwambale Bihande and Winfred Kiiza Nyabahasa.
FDC’s Aloysius Baguma Kighema has also been able to attract, Col. (Rtd) Dr. Kiiza Besigye, Engineer Patrick Oboi Amuriat, the FDC party President, Kasese District Woman MP, Florence Kabugho, Godfrey Atkins Katusabe, the MP for Bukonzo County West among others.
Gideon Thembo Mujungu of the National Resistance Movement -NRM has also been able to attract the Vice President, Major (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, the Ugandan Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, the Vice National President of the NRM party, Al Hajji Moses Kigongo and the Party Secretary General, the Rt. Hon. Richard Todwongo.
Others are Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the NRM National Vice Chairperson in-charge of Western Uganda, the NRM’s Director of Mobilization, Rosemary Sseninde, the NRM’s Director for Communication and Information, Mr. Emmanuel Dombo and the NRM MPs from Kasese district.
According to the harmonized campaign programme, Tuesday 16, Doreen Izagiire, an Independent candidate in the race was expected to be in Lake Katwe sub-county for her campaign rally, Juma Munezero, another independent candidate was expected to campaign in Mbunga sub-county while David Mulindwa Isimbwa, also an independent candidate was expected to campaign from Katwe – Kabatooro Town Council.
The NUP’s candidate was also in Kilembe sub-county and Muhokya Town Council. While at Muhokya Primary School Playground for a campaign rally, Winfred Kiiza described Kathika as a special leader who worked hard towards the establishment of a tarmac road in his constituency and therefore deserves to go back to parliament.
Hon. Yokasi Bwambale Bihande told the gathering that as members of the Alliance for National Transformation, they decided to backup the NUP candidate because he is a trusted and tested leader in terms of service delivery.
While in Kahokya sub-county, the FDC team led by the party president, Eng. Patrick Oboi Amuriat said this was the time for the people of Busongora County South to tell President Museveni that they were still traumatized from the attack on the Rwenzururu Administration offices and Royal Palace in November 2016 where scores of people lost their lives while others including the King are still incarcerated.
While at Katunguru Primary School in Lake Katwe sub-county, the National Vice Chairperson for the NRM party, Hon. Al Hajji Moses Kigongo, assured the residents that their issues including the lack of a land title, unemployment among the youths as well as licensing more boats at the landing site would be solved as long as they have voted for the NRM candidate.
