Diplomatic Fallout: Rwanda Expels Belgian Envoys Amid Escalating Tensions

Rwanda has taken a bold diplomatic step by ordering all Belgian diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours, following its decision to sever ties with Belgium. The move, announced by Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, marks a significant escalation in tensions between the East African nation and its former colonial ruler.

According to Kigali, the decision stems from Belgium’s continued “neocolonial ambitions” and its alleged role in undermining Rwanda’s interests, particularly concerning the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Rwandan government has accused Belgium of siding against it in the regional crisis and using “manipulation and misinformation” to mobilize international opposition.

“Rwanda has made this decision after careful analysis of multiple factors, all linked to Belgium’s persistent efforts to maintain its outdated colonial influence,” the statement read.

The expulsion order follows increasing international scrutiny of Rwanda’s alleged support for the M23 rebel group, which has been fighting against the DRC government in the country’s volatile eastern region. While Rwanda has not explicitly confirmed its involvement, it has defended the M23, describing its members as Congolese citizens of Rwandan descent who are fighting for equal rights.

Kigali further accused Belgium of historical complicity in fueling ethnic divisions in Rwanda, particularly during the colonial era and leading up to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. It claimed that Belgium continues to provide a platform for groups promoting genocide denial and extremist ideologies.

“Belgium’s role in shaping Rwanda’s tragic past, from its colonial policies to its actions before and after the 1994 genocide, cannot be ignored. Its continued interference in Rwandan affairs reflects a refusal to acknowledge Rwanda’s sovereignty,” the statement added.

While Rwanda has pledged to protect the premises and assets of the Belgian diplomatic mission in line with international law, the expulsion of its diplomats signals a deepening diplomatic rift that could have far-reaching consequences for both countries.

This development raises questions about how Belgium and its allies will respond, as well as the broader implications for Rwanda’s international standing amid ongoing regional tensions.
