Bobi Wine declares Kathika as NUP flag bearer in Busongora South parliamentary by-election

By Zalimon Basighalha (Good luck)

The National Unity Platform Principal, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has officially endorsed Mr. Jackson Mbaju Kathika as the official flag bearer for the forthcoming Busongora South Constituency by-election.

The seat fell vacant last month following a court of appeal ruling on a petition filed against by Kathika against the then area MP, Gideon Thembo Mujungu over some irregularities that marred the January 14, 2021 parliamentary elections.

Following the Court of Appeal ruling that overturned the earlier decision of the High Court in Fort-portal, Mujungu was thrown out of parliament and the Electoral Commission was ordered to organize fresh elections.

The Electoral Commission has since set August 18, 2022 as the date on which the by-election will be held.

Other political parties have also presented their flag bearers including Aloysius Baguma Kighema for FDC, Gideon Thembo Mujungu for NRM and Bernadette Businge for DP among other interested aspiring candidates and according to a road map from the Electoral body, the campaigns are expected to begin on July 10th – 16th.

Now, today afternoon, while at the NUP’s head offices at Kamwokya, Kyagulanyi in a video clip announced Kathika as the party’s official flag bearer in the forthcoming Busongora South parliamentary by-election.

Kyagulanyi who was seated with Kathika appealed to the eligible voters in Busongora South to rally behind and support his political party so that it gets a legislator from Kasese district.

On his part, Kathika hailed the NUP Principal for entrusting him with the party flag and pledged to hold it firmly in order to realize victory.

The Western Regional party Deputy President, Jolly Mugisha asked the electorate in Kasese district to vote for people who could lobby for the rehabilitation of Kilembe Mines and Katwe Salt Mines among others.

According to her, the dreams to have such resources rehabilitated need a potential politician with a strong lobbying capacity.

Bryans Basisa, the Rwenzori Regional NUP Chairperson while speaking to the press shortly after a meeting that endorsed Kathika as the official bearer, implored the people of Busongora South to open up their eyes towards monitoring the electoral process and asked them to work towards having a free and fair election.
