The Police in Kasese have arrested five member of the National Unity Platform –NUP for allegedly holding an illegal meeting.

Those arrested include Bryans Basisa, the Kasese District Chairperson for the National Unity Platform, Jeff Bwambale, the Regional Coordinator for Bundibugyo district, Tonozo Sunday from Ntoroko district, Isaac Bwambale, the former candidate for the District Councilor representing Nyamwamba Division and Oniz Kule, the Coordinator for Hima Town Council.

ASP Ismail Kaawo, the acting Rwenzori East Police Spokesperson, confirmed the arrest of the NUP members and said police received intelligence information that a group of people from across the Rwenzori sub –region had convened a meeting in one of the buildings in Kilembe Quarters, Kasese town but its motives were not clearly known.

Police and the Army were then forced to surround the building belonging to Bryans Basisa between 10:00am -11:00am and arrested the people who were in a meeting.

Samuel Masereka, the NUP District Registrar, said as he was coming to attend the meeting, he was called on phone by one of those arrested that they had been surrounded by security operatives.

He condemned the act by the security operatives, saying other political parties including NRM, FDC and others have continued holding their political meetings that are highly attended and wondered why government has continuously blocked the activities of NUP.
