One person confirmed dead, another critically injured in fire outbreak at Mpondwe Customs in Kasese

One person has died on spot and another seriously injured following a fire outbreak that occurred on Tuesday afternoon at Mpondwe Customs in Mpondwe –Lhubiriha Town Council, Kasese district.

The incident involved a truck of a Tanzanian origin which was carrying spirits heading to the Democratic Republic of Congo but upon reaching customs, it hit a temporary structure that houses a Covid-19 screening point and subsequently burst into flames of fire.

Reports indicate that the people who were nearby ran for their lives but the driver, who has not yet been identified, could not escape from the fires and died on spot.

Selevest Masereka Mapoze, the Chairperson L. C III for Mpondwe- Lhubiriha Town Council confirmed the incident to Rwenzori Daily and said one person, who was only identified s a daughter to one Bumali, was injured and has since been rushed to Bwera Government Hospital for treatment.

By press time, the Fire Brigade Unit of the Uganda Police Force was still trying to put off the fires so that it shouldn’t spread to the surrounding areas and cause havoc.
