About 50 selected families thronged Kiime Resort in Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council to receive at least three pigs each from the National Agricultural Advisory Services-NAADS.
Isaac Mwaka Matsande aged 60 and a resident of Rusese B cell in Mpondwe-Lhubiriha town council could not hide his excitement upon receipt of the two sows and a boar.
Matsande, who revealed that he had also received another three pigs last year, said the piggery project is fast-changing the fortunes of his family. He adds that he will use proceeds from the project to pay school fees for his thirteen children and take care of his two wives.
Mrs. Irene Mukirania Kibikwamu a resident of Rukungu Cell expressed her gratitude to government after receiving her three pigs.
A total of 150 pigs was given to the selected families in Rusese Ward of Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council while 50 other pigs were given to selected beneficiaries in Nyakiyumbu sub-county and Bulembia Division.
Speaking to the press after handing over the pigs to the beneficiaries, the Minister of State of ICT and National Guidance, Godfrey Baluku Kabbyanga Kiime, said the initiative is intended to eradicate poverty in his home village.
He, however, added that plans were under way to ensure all parts of the district benefit from this arrangement.
Kabyanga also revealed that he was engaging the Ministry of Science and Technology to construct an animal feeds processing machine in the area.
