Kasese Landslides: Bereaved families given shs5m as death toll rises to 16

The Prime Minister, Robinah Nabanja has on Wednesday informed parliament about the sad occurrence of landslides in Kasese which has claimed 16 lives and left scores with injuries.

The landslides occurred in Kasika village in Kigoro parish in Rukoki sub county following a heavy downpour that started at 2:30am on Tuesday when people were sleeping.

Speaking to the Media, the Kasese District Chairperson Mr. Eliphazi Muhindi Bukombi, said one more body was recovered from the mud increasing the number of the dead to 16.

From the assessment report by the Uganda Red Cross, the death statistics show 2 male adults, 4 female adults, 3 male children, and 7 female children.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday afternoon, Nabanja said that the Government has provided support of Shs5m to each family that has lost a relative to help in the burial arrangements.

The Office of the Prime Minister has also activated an Emergency Response Unit headed by Brigadier Gen. Kinalwa who is already on the ground.

Affected families have been advised to move to Kogere Church of Uganda in Kasese Municipality.
