Agriculture is fundamental to sustainable Development: Farmers encouraged to opt for agricultural loans from financial institutions

By Joackim Kule

Farmers in Kasese district have been encouraged to opt for agricultural loans from financial institutions in order to be economically empowered to buy farm inputs and yield more from the practice.

The encouragement was sounded on Friday by the Manager for the Agricultural Lending Head Officer for the Post Bank, Mr. Jimmy Ocen while addressing the farmer groups during their meeting at TJ Global in Kasese town.

The meeting was aimed at sensitizing the farmers about the best methods of applying for agricultural loans in an attempt to produce largely and earn much from the practice for improved livelihoods.

Mr. Ocen explained that if the farmers acquire either micro or macro agricultural loans, they are enabled to practice irrigation farming and buy a variety of crop species that are resistant to drought.

He, however, warned against the practice of borrowing money and then divert it to other projects that would make them default.

Augustine Asaba, the Manager of Post Bank-Kasese Branch asked the farmers not to be spending all the monies that they earn from farming but to invest little, save and educate their children.

Godfrey Bwambale, the Kasese Municipal Principal Commercial Officer appealed to the bank financiers to also extend the sensitization services to the people in rural areas so that a big number of farmers improve on their farming practices.

Some of the farmers that attended the meeting, asked the financiers to reduce on interest rates to favour their business.
