A 38 year-old man has been shot dead from the Queen Elizabeth National Park in Kasese district by the Rangers who are manning the protected area.
Mulibatha Kule, who hails from Kiburara – Rwembyo village in Kisinga sub-county but resides in Kikonzo cell of the Central Division in Kasese Municipality, was shot last night inside the park on allegations of attempting to attack the Rangers with a spear and panga.
Bashir Hangi, the Spokesperson for Uganda Wildlife Authority –UWA has confirmed the development to Messiah Radio on phone.
According to Hangi, the deceased was shot by the Rangers who were on night patrol. The victim had set up a trap inside the park and when he went to check on the trap, he came into contact with the Rangers and engaged them in a scuffle that resulted into shooting him dead.
After the incident, police was notified and immediately swung into action to retrieve the body and brought it to Kasese Municipal Health Centre III mortuary for a postmortem.
Jimmy Bwambale Kamusithu, the Central Division Councilor representing Kikonzo Elective area told the press that the incident becomes the 05th one just in a period of five months.
James Mwiruwabo, the in-charge of Kasese Municipal Health Centre III said the facility has on several occasions had cases of unidentified bodies that are brought to the facility and later buried temporarily to the Municipal Council Cemetery. He called on the public to always turn up to identify the dead bodies whenever such incidents happen.
Jana Kanyinyi, a relative to the deceased told our reporter that he used to know his brother as builder, adding that he was surprised to hear that the deceased was among the people practicing poaching in the park.
